Benefits of a SMOOTH BOTTOM

April 11, 2015 Vessel Performance
  • 4 TTHE BENEFITS OF A SMOOTH  RUNNING SURFACE ARE MANY.
  • A SMOOTH SURFACE GLIDES OVER AND THROUGH THE WATER EASILY.
  • Speed and efficiency are both adversely affected by any marine growth attached to your hull.
  • Mechanical running gear, Props, Shafts, outdrives and lower units create extra drag when fouled.
  • Even a small amount of Marine Growth on your boat, will increase drag.
  • Barnacles and Marine Growth can damage your vessels trim tab actuators.
  • Marine growth can damage your vessels lower unit seals and components.
  • There are several ways to reduce and prevent marine growth on your vessel.
  • Here are a few suggestions.
  • Hauling the boat out of the water on a lift or trailer is an easy way to keep MARINE GROWTH off your boat.
  • Sonic waves resonated through the hull from products like the “Barnacle Zapper”, reduce marine growth.
  • Ant-Fouling paint is also very effective at reducing marine growth, but has a useful life-span.
  • There are several types of ANTI-FOULING paint, some ablative and some toxic to the growth or attachment of algae and barnacles.
  • Be sure to leave zincs and anodes paint free, and if worn or damaged replace them.
  • If your vessel must stay in the water, and it is painted with anti-fouling paint, have the bottom scrubbed with a soft abrasive pad every few months, or as needed, a local diver can do this for you if you do not want to tackle it.
  • Anti-fouling coatings are smooth, when compared to a fouled bottom, but not as smooth as the factory gel-coat.
